Panayiotis Nicolaides directs the scientific programme of the EU Tax Observatory and manages its contacts with external partners. He has extensive experience in high level policy-making in the EU, having worked previously at the European Commission and having served as Special Economic Advisor to the Greek Alternate Minister of Finance. From 2015 to 2018, he was an Alternate Director at the European Stability Mechanism, and Alternate Member at the Eurogroup Working Group and the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Council, where he prepared close to 30 Eurogroup meetings and 4 Euro Summits. During this time, he played a key role in managing the successful implementation of Greece's 3rd macroeconomic adjustment programme and in facilitating agreement on a three-year long debt restructuring negotiation ending in August 2018. Based at the Hertie School in Berlin and at the EU Tax Observatory in Paris, his own research is in the fields of public economics and taxation, with a focus on tax compliance and how to improve it.
